Pat Sirutteok is a traditional Korean steamed rice cake made with red beans. It’s often enjoyed during special occasions like birthdays, ancestral rites, and holidays. The soft, chewy rice cake paired with the sweet and slightly nutty red bean filling creates a delightful flavor and texture

Ingredients:

For the Red Bean Filling:

  • 1 cup dried red beans   
  • Water
  • Sugar   
  • Salt   

For the Rice Cake:

  • 2 cups glutinous rice flour
  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Salt   

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Red Bean Filling:
    • Rinse the red beans thoroughly.   
    • Soak them in water for several hours or overnight.
    • Drain and boil the beans in fresh water until they are soft and tender.
    • Add sugar and salt to taste.
    • Mash the beans to create a smooth paste.
  2. Prepare the Rice Cake Batter:
    • Mix glutinous rice flour with water, sugar, and salt to form a smooth batter.
  3. Steam the Rice Cake:
    • Grease a steamer tray.
    • Pour a layer of rice batter into the tray.
    • Spread a layer of red bean filling over the batter.
    • Repeat the layers until the tray is full.
    • Cover the steamer and steam for about 30-40 minutes, or until the rice cake is cooked through.
  4. Serve:
    • Let the rice cake cool slightly before cutting into slices.
    • Serve warm or cold.

Tips:

  • You can add other ingredients to the rice cake batter, such as chopped nuts or dried fruits.
  • For a more festive look, you can decorate the rice cake with colorful food coloring or edible flowers.
  • Pat Sirutteok is best enjoyed fresh, but it can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a few days.
